Fishing has been around for centuries. From the traditional fishing came the modern method of fishing called the bass fishing. All sorts of fishing gear, including reels, rods, lines, lures have been developed, hence, the founding of Penn Fishing Tackle Company in the 1930s.

Unfortunately, if all men were true sportsmen, we wouldn’t need laws and regulations for hunting and fishing. But then, we wouldn’t need most of the laws that govern human behavior.

When it comes to fishing, the true sportsman loves nature, has a wholesome respect for the rules of safety, and considers others as well as himself. He’s the shining example you hope your kids will follow as they become adults.

Serious game fishing is not just something to do. It reflects a love for fishing and for the natural world, whether in a forest, on a mountain side, or from the deck of a deep sea fishing vessel.

The sportsman-like game fisherman seeks the challenge of subtle strategic maneuvers, lightening reaction speed to the unexpected tug of the line, the whir of the reel, and the thrill of fin-to-reel combat. He’s not in it for the thrill of slaughter or material rewards. The game fisherman loves the joy of challenge and the satisfaction of a well-fought battle with a valiant opponent, the humble fish.

One of the most popular game fishing pursuits is offshore game fishing. Anglers seek the strong, big lean fish like marlin, swordfish, or sailfish. This game is captured from the sea, and the romance of offshore game fishing is irresistible. Some sports fishers enter competitions to win the prize for the biggest catch. Some keep their catch as a trophy they can enjoy forever, remembering the glory of the ocean victory for years.

Offshore game fishing is an ambitious undertaking. It usually calls for a strong hardy fishing boat, ranging from 30 to 50 feet in length, and providing sleeping quarters for long ocean trips.

Reeling in the game fish is a true challenge. The prey is big, strong, and fast. It takes equal strength and true persistence to stay with the battle as your finned opponent pulls away from the boat. Maintaining a constant tension on the fishing line requires experience and skill in addition to patience and perseverance.

Offshore game fishing calls for a special type of fisherman. Beyond the challenge of catching and landing a worthy game fish, offshore game fishing involves close communication with the mother of nature, the sea. It brings pure, clean air and quiet solitude. It takes a man back in time to the days when Ahab searched fearlessly for his nemesis.

Offshore game fishing recalls the days of sailing ships, heroism, and glory found today only in the imagination. The offshore game fisherman reminds us of the valiant swashbuckling adventurer and warms the heart with respect for the rules of honor and fairness that are often forgotten in today’s mean streets.

Are you fishing with the right reel? Maybe you should try Shimano Reels.

Whether you’re a freshwater or saltwater fisherman, you’ve probably asked yourself the question, “Am I using the right fishing reel?” Because let’s face it – if you’re not catching fish, something has to give! And guys, we all know it isn’t us! It’s undoubtedly the fishing rod, fishing reel, the weather – basically anything but us!

Well, I have good news: Shimano has a fishing reel for virtually every type of fishing, whether you’re a fresh or saltwater fisherman. Let me walk you through a few different types of Shimano Reels. We’ll go through these in 5 different posts, and when we’re finished you should have a good idea whether or not you’re using the Shimano Reel that will best suit your fishing style.

It’s important to understand that Shimano Reels are grouped into five major categories:

•Shimano Conventional Reels
•Shimano Low Profile Baitcasting Reels
•Shimano Round Baitcasting Fishing Reels
•Shimano Offshore Spinning Reels
•Shimano Traditional Spinning Reels

Today we’ll discuss Shimano’s Conventional line of fishing reels. Shimano Conventional reels are an excellent choice for both offshore saltwater fishing as well as blue water fishing.

If you didn’t know (and don’t be ashamed guys), offshore saltwater fishing is fishing away from the shore, usually on a boat. Offshore saltwater fishing includes the following types (but is not limited to) of fishing: bottom fishing, angling, blue water fishing, and many more types of fishing.

Blue water fishing is exactly what it sounds like – fishing in blue water! Fish for cod, shark, and bluefin fish with a great conventional reel from Shimano.

For blue water fishing, the Shimano Torsa is an excellent choice. This stellar fishing reel was awarded the best choice award for Bluewater fishing as well as a “best in show” and “best in category” by the American Sporfishing Association.

If you’re an angler, don’t miss the Shimano Tekota. This great Shimano Reel has a built-in line counter so you’ll know exactly how deep you’re fishing. The Shimano Tekota comes in 4 models, the Shimano Tekota 300, the Shimano Tekota 500, the Shimano Tekota 600, and the Shimano Tekota 800.

Is Marlin / Tuna fishing your sport? The Shimano Tyrons is an absolutely stellar fishing reel for all heavy duty saltwater fishing applications. The Tyrons comes in many models as well as a few two-speed options.

Finally, the Shimano Torium is a great reel, light in weight yet durable in construction, that will work well in all live bait or bottom water fishing application. The very versatile Shimano Torium comes in 5 different models: the Shimano Torium 14, the Shimano Torium 16, the Shimano Torium 20, the Shimano Torium 30, and the Shimano Torium 50. With so many different options, you’ll have a hard time settling on just one Torium!

Sport fishing has been steeped in popularity for decades. It’s a common assumption when one refers to sport fishing that they are always thinking about marlin, sailfish, or swordfish, a.k.a. the saltwater varieties of trophy-sized fish. However, you are definitely missing the boat (no pun intended) if you think all the excitement is reserved exclusively for ocean fishing. There is much excitement to be had with a freshwater fishing vacation – especially if you journey to Alaska in search of the Northern Pike.

Northern Pike are found to be fairly common in certain areas of the United States, namely in the northern and Midwest states as well as some of the Rocky Mountain areas. However, no where are they more prolific and trophy-sized than what you can find by journeying out into some of the more remote waterways of Alaska.

The Northern Pike fisheries of Alaska can be found anywhere in Alaska’s interior and on out to the Eastern Kenai Peninsula. What you have to be aware of the most is how the climate (or the weather, if you prefer) affects the cycles of the individual regions in Alaska. Climate and weather influences are key factors when it comes to the success (or failure) of a fishing excursion in this state, so keep that in mind when it comes time to plan the trip.

Alaska has been broken up into nine regions where sport fishing is concerned, in the following manner:

1.Anchorage and Matsu Valley
2.Arctic, Yukon, and Kuskokwim
3.Bristol Bay and Kodiak
4.Kenai Peninsula
5.Northern Southeast
6.Prince William Sound
7.Southern Southeast
8.Susitna Valley
9.Tanana Region

Each of these regions offers a diversity of fishing, as well as some of the more unique and indigenous Alaskan varieties. However, the fly fishing opportunities are abundant, no matter what area you decide to visit. The northern interior and the arctic regions tend to be very primitive areas, while the Tanana Region lies in the heart of Alaska. The Northern Southeast region is rich in history dating back to the Klondike days, but also presents a choice of both freshwater and saltwater fishing opportunities. If it’s a variety of challenging fishing that tempts you, then the Kenai Peninsula is definitely the place to break out the rod and tackle.

No matter where you venture out into Alaska, you will find a diverse range of excursions to award you with excellent Northern Pike fishing. Fly fishing tournaments can be found in a variety of areas year round in Alaska. If Northern Pike is your target, then by all means, you’ll definitely enjoy your Alaska vacation. Trophy Northern Pike excursions can be found by doing a little research, but your due diligence will more than likely pay off.

Look to the Internet when you begin your search. There are many websites offering information on the subject. Make sure to allow plenty of time for the planning stage. Private guides and fishing excursions for Northern Pike tend to fill up rather quickly, so the sooner you book your reservation, the better.
