Makweti, set on the edge of a small flowing waterfall with views over the reserve, is simply lovely. If Rhinos are your passion then this is a wonderful park for viewings: literally five minutes from the lodge I saw six rhinos grazing peacefully (my excitement was lost on my guide who was more interested in the wildebeest!) as well as a brown hyena, usually so elusive, which amazingly allowed us to creep behind him for ten minutes before disappearing up into the hillside.

The next day I moved to another location in the Waterberg region and Ants Hill, a beautiful property where the focus is on horse riding in the bush. Ants Hill is an eclectic mix of vibrant colours, textured and beautifully crafted furniture supported by stunning views. Immediately I fell in love with the laid back, relaxed nature of the management and big smiley faces of the staff.

My first activity was an evening ride where I asked for a fairly ‘exciting’ horse and was generously rewarded. We had a lovely ride out in the bush, with fantastic views across the plains with a variety of game. The highlight for me was when a picnic table laid out with drinks and nibbles suddenly appeared around the corner as the sun was slowly descending. We were told to take the tack off the horses and leave it on the grass – I was then expecting some grooms to appear and magically whisk the horses away. However, we just released the horses and they galloped off into the sunset towards home. If only we could do that with our horses in England!

The following morning to make the most of Ants Hill I went out on another riding safari. After a few hours of tracking two rhinos we stumbled across a rhino and her three day old calf. What an adrenalin thrill – there can be few wildlife experiences as exciting as watching a rhino and her baby whilst close by on horseback, feeling both excited yet vulnerable.

I also stayed at Ants Hill sister property, Ants Nest, a smaller lodge hidden in the bush that can be hired. Again, it was a wonderful blend of antiques, beautiful furniture, colourful fabrics and creative architecture. The focus here is also horse riding, game drives and walks. I highly advise trying a massage during your stay too!

From Ants Nest, I drove back to Johannesburg where I flew by combination of scheduled flight and private charter to the Makalali Conservancy. In this reserve only two lodges exist and I stayed at Garonga – aptly named ’safari for your soul’. The lodge is a blend of raw textiles, wood, clay with soothing neutral colours of fabrics. The game is actually excellent despite the fact that it does not sell itself on this basis. We saw cheetah, lion, various plains game and a variety of nocturnal animals. Regular sightings at camp include elephant and kudu (during my bush shower I had four eyes on me from two bull kudus – a little embarrassing). Massages, relaxing by the pool, dining and reading are all musts at Garonga. I was going to venture out to the sleep-out deck but a huge downpour put paid to that idea. I loved Garonga: it is perfectly run, it is extremely relaxing and the game is superb – an unknown gem in South Africa.

Next stop Vilanculos, the southern capital of Mozambique, where I was greeted by a blast of humidity and drizzle (I was visiting in the rainy season – whilst we have some great trips at Steppes we cannot always go at the best time of year). Having endured the bureaucracy of the visa desk, I drove through town to get to the speedboat out to Marlin Lodge on Benguerra Island. Cyclone Favio had certainly made its mark here. Trees lay strewn across roads and destroyed shanty houses were all regular sights. However, the one abiding memory is how friendly the local Mozambicans are. Nothing was too much hassle.

There are four main lodges that I visited during my stay in Mozambique – each perfect in their different style. All have pristine white sandy beaches and glorious turquoise sea. Marlin is the bigger and most economical lodge (during my visit they were still in the middle of completing the building work). Our evening there was spent in an old dhow. The two boys that crewed the dhow surprised us by being able to speak eight languages, including being totally fluent in English.

From Marlin I moved to Benguerra, a lodge that was the first to open in the Bazurto Archipelago and I would certainly say that after 18 years they definitely have their finger on the pulse. The food was exquisite (langoustine, crab, freshly caught fish), the management superb and the rooms which have been recently refurbished are quite simply faultless Рcopper baths, artistic d̩cor, mosaic outdoor showers, personal plunge pools and private dining decks and with your own view of the ocean. The pi̬ce de resistance is the old dhow beach bar Рa perfect place to end the day with a cool beer watching the sunset.

Azura is the newly opened eco-lodge that is contemporary with clean cool colours and funky d̩cor. They have excelled themselves in using as much raw materials as possible within the interior design. The focus here is simplicity Рthe d̩cor kept at a minimum with flashes of creativity. It has a whole host of activities to keep you entertained or if you just want to relax then the complimentary massage is an absolute must Рtruly superb.

Finally I visited Indigo Bay, which is a family friendly resort – there is a whole host of activities, a newly built first class spa, water sports and diving centre, horse riding and golf. It is a resort for those that love their mod-cons including mini bars, air conditioning, TV, kiddie clubs. You would certainly never get bored at Indigo and I would not hesitate in recommending it to all families.

Mozambique is not an easy destination to get to – whether in terms of travel or cost – however, I cannot rate it highly enough in terms of its culture, the people and the overall ‘real and rawness’. It is certainly the epitome of barefoot luxury. I would advise going soon before tourism makes its mark too strongly…

The epic story begins somewhere in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Australia. A clown fish named Marlin (Albert Brooks) lives a wonderful life in a peaceful underwater colony of fish and other fascinating sea life with his wife. However, that serene setting is demolished when a vicious predator attacks their home, killing his wife. Distraught, Marlin takes comfort in the egg left behind which grows into his son, Nemo (Alexander Gould).

Because of this early trauma, Marlin is extremely overprotective when it comes to Nemo. He follows a step behind everywhere his son goes, makes Nemo stay in the house whenever possible, and remains quite apprehensive about his son going to school. Marlin’s fears are realized when Nemo is captured on his first day of school and taken away to live in a fish tank on land. Intent on freeing his son, Marlin sets out on a bold and daring quest to retrace the path of the abductor’s boat.

Wandering through the ocean depths, he meets up with Dory (Ellen DeGeneres) – an absent-minded, yet friendly – fish who remains determined to help her new friend recover his lost son. Together, they encounter a pack of sharks and a countless array of diverse and fascinating underwater creatures.

Meanwhile, Nemo is plunged into a dentist office fish tank overlooking Sidney Harbor where he meets a number of new and exciting friends. The other aquatic life, long confined to the tank themselves, initiate Nemo into their fraternity, revealing the history of their attempts to escape. Enlisting Nemo as their point man (or fish), they concoct a number of schemes such as clogging the tank’s filter so they can make a break for it when they’re taken out for the tank cleaning. With the threat of the dentist presenting Nemo as a present to his nerdy niece, the stakes are raised for our young hero and time is of the essence…

Sporting one of the best written animated screenplays of all-time and a breathtaking original score by Thomas Newman, Finding Nemo is a pleasurable affair for both parents and children. The writers pull off an admirable job of combining adult and kid humor throughout the script in such a way that it doesn’t detract from the experience for either age group. With a number of likeable characters, the audience will find itself rooting for Marlin, Nemo, and all their friends to accomplish the task before them. Overall, this is a must-see film for all age groups, not only because of the great story and artful performances, but if anything, simply because the animation is a wonder in-and-of itself…

Mention the name The Bahamas and sparkling blue water with pink or white sand beaches spring to mind. Conch fritters, Conch salad, 700 islands, duty free shopping and Junkanoo are all terms that are synonymous with the Bahamas. This island nation has a total land area of 5,300 square miles and consists of 700 islands plus 2,500 cays (low banks or reefs). New Providence Island on which Nassau (the capital) is located is 21 miles by 7 miles. Paradise Island, which is 5.5 miles long by 2/3 of a mile wide is connected to Nassau by a short bridge. Thousands of tourists visit Nassau every year to enjoy the clear water or place their bets at the gambling tables at Paradise Island.

All of the Bahamas however has myriad outdoor recreational activitiesthat are perfect for burning off the pounds gained from eating all those conch fritters or adding some variety to your holiday and Nassau is no exception. For the business person who wants to catch some recreational activity on a business trip or the individual who wants to get some fresh air after all the time at the gambling tables, Nassau’s outdoor recreation can be all day or just a few hours.

Those sparkling blue waters make Nassau an ideal location for snorkeling. Some of the more popular snorkeling destinations for excursions leaving from Nassau include Rainbow Reef, Blue Lagoon Island (home to Stingray City as well as other snorkeling venues), Blackbeard’s Cay, Pearl Island, and Rose Island Reef. Rainbow Reef is approximately 45 minutes from Nassau by catamaran or other high-speed boat. The water at Rainbow Reef is about 15 feet deep throughout the viable swimming and snorkeling area. Blue Lagoon is a circular island encircling water. A narrow opening in the land leads into a large pool of water. A 15-minute walk through some of the most beautiful beaches and on bridges spanning absolutely calm sparkling blue water leads to Stingray City. Another stingray encounter can be had at Pearl Island which is a 30-minute boat ride from Nassau. Yellow tail snapper, Grouper, and many other tame fish make Athol Island in Athol Island National Marine Park at the eastern end of Nassau Harbor an outstanding snorkel site.

Those sparkling blue waters also make Nassau a wonderful location for the sport fisherman. Fishing charters are available for half day or full day with a choice of deep-sea fishing or reef fishing. Wahoo are abundant between November to January and 100 pounders are frequent. Dolphin fish (Mahi Mahi) are found between April and June, while Sailfish can be fought during April and May and again between October and November. Barracuda and Marlin (Black, Blue and White) are found year round.

For the landlubber, there is off-road cycling, away from traffic and noise. On all-terrain bicycles, you can enjoy a guided tour of shady woodland trails, open forest, the seashore and mangrove creeks and visit the historic village of Adelaide. You can have a relaxed, easy ride or a longer route. For the seasoned cyclist there are more challenging rides.

The Bahamas sits on the migration route for birds moving north and south on their winter and spring migrations. As such there are two opportunities to see many northern species. Of course, no visit to the Bahamas would be complete for a birder without viewing the Bahama Pintail duck (also known as the White-cheeked Pintail). These inhabitants of lagoons and mangrove swamps are widely distributed and the clear water of the mangroves makes viewing them a pleasure. Other species that are generally seen include eurasian collared doves, neotropic cormorants, american coot, great blue herons, snowy egrets, great egrets, reddish egrets, green herons, white ibis, blue winged teal, northern mockingbirds. Some of the locations for viewing various species include the Paradise Island ponds, Clifton Heritage site and the Harold & Wilson ponds.

For those who want to be outdoors but simply want a walking pace, Nassau has retained much of its older architecture and blended it with modern buildings so that it creates a harmonious whole. The original part of the city is small enough that you can wander along and see much of the historic architecture. Parliament Square with the Houses of Parliament, the Old Colonial Secretary’s office, the Supreme Court and the Statue of Queen Victoria is definitely worth a visit. Nearby at Parliament and Shirley Streets is the Nassau Public Library that was originally a prison. Not far away at Shirley and Elizabeth Streets is the Bahamas Historical Society with numerous exhibits.

If it is “action” and people watching you seek, Arawak Cay is not to be missed. This lively gathering spot has a row of small wooden restaurants fronted by a large park and backed by the sea. You can sit on the verandah of any of the restaurants or in the open air and watch the parade of people as they stroll by. Have a Kalik (Bahamian Beer) and enjoy the West Indian atmosphere and when hunger strikes you can have a conch salad or conch fritters or fried fish prepared before your eyes.
